Secure AI system design review

Secure AI system design review

What is Secure AI system design review?

A structured security assessment of a proposed AI system’s architecture, carried out before anything is built. Reviewers examine a proposed design on paper: what data goes into a model, what that model can reach, who can use it, and where information leaves your environment. The output is a list of rated findings, agreed design changes and a decision to approve, approve with conditions, or redesign. It is secure by design applied to AI.

Why organisations need secure AI system design review?

AI systems fail in ways a standard security review can miss. APRA’s April 2026 letter lists prompt injection, data leakage and insecure integrations among attack paths it’s observed, and expects controls that address them.

Fixing these in a design document is easier than fixing them after go-live. A recorded review also gives your risk committee and customers proof that security was considered up front.

How to build secure AI system design review?

  1. Gather proposed architecture, data sources and vendor terms.
  2. Map data flows and trust boundaries.
  3. Threat model against OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications and MITRE ATLAS.
  4. Rate each finding and agree a design change.
  5. Record decision and conditions in the AI register.
