Secure AI governance framework

Secure AI governance framework

The policies, roles and controls an organisation uses to decide which AI systems it runs, who’s accountable for each one and how it proves they are safe and secure.

What is Secure AI governance framework?

An up-to-date rulebook for every AI system you use, from a vendor chatbot to an in-house model. It has five parts: an AI register, a named owner for each system, risk tiers, controls matched to each tier and ongoing monitoring tied to executive and board reports.

“Secure” means security controls such as access limits, data protection and threat testing sit inside governance, alongside privacy and ethics. It’s usually built on ISO/IEC 42001 or NIST AI RMF and aligned with the Australian Government’s Guidance for AI Adoption.

Why organisations need Secure AI governance framework?

Regulators now ask for it. APRA’s April 2026 letter to industry expects AI frameworks, reporting lines, an inventory of AI use cases and boards having the knowledge to oversee it. From 10 December 2026, privacy policies must explain automated decisions that significantly affect individuals. Enterprise customers ask similar questions in procurement.

Without a framework, teams adopt AI tools nobody has recorded, so nobody can produce evidence of an automated decision’s process when an auditor asks for it.

How to build secure AI governance framework?

  1. Register every AI system in use, including vendor tools.
  2. Name one accountable owner for each.
  3. Tier each system by risk: data it touches, decisions it influences.
  4. Apply controls for that tier, such as design review, testing and human oversight.
  5. Monitor, report, and re-assess when anything changes.
