Secure AI Strategy

What is Secure AI strategy?

A plan that sets which AI use cases an organisation will pursue, in what order and which security capabilities must be in place before each one goes live. A roadmap that ties AI ambition to risk appetite. It states business goals for AI, how much risk a board will accept, where security stands today and a sequence of work required to execute the strategy over a set period of time (for example, one to two years). Each stage pairs AI use cases with the security controls that must exist first.

It differs from a general AI strategy because it’s security-driven. Security decides what gets executed, when and in what order.

Why Australian organisation’s need secure AI startegy?

AI adoption often runs ahead of security. APRA’s April 2026 letter to industry expects boards to oversee an AI strategy that fits within the organisation’s risk appetite, which is hard to show without a written plan.

A strategy also prevents two costly patterns: blocking all AI out of caution, or approving everything and finding exposure later. Funding gets easier when each security investment is tied to an AI use case it unlocks.

How to build secure AI strategy?

  1. Agree business objectives for AI with executives.
  2. Set risk appetite: which data and decisions AI can touch.
  3. Assess current state: what AI is already in use? What relevant security controls are already in place? What skills do your people have?
  4. Sequence use cases by business value and risk.
  5. Attach security capabilities, assign owners and a budget to each stage. Review this at least annually.
